Revisiting the Biblical Debate About Same Sex Relationships:

A Careful Examination of How the Traditional View Fails Biblical, Academic and Pastoral Scrutiny
—and Why It Matters

by Alex Haiken

Few issues in the church today are as consequential—or as widely assumed to be settled—as the question of what the Bible says about homosexuality and same-sex relationships.

Yet perceived certainty is not the same as careful and responsible interpretation. The real question is not simply what we assume these passages mean today, but what they meant to those who first heard them in their original context.

This presentation invites participants to step back from inherited assumptions and to draw out from the text what it originally meant to the author and to the original audience—rather than read into it the many contemporary interpretations that may have grown up around it.

Who This Is For

This presentation is designed for a broad audience—from those deeply familiar with these questions to those simply exploring them for the first time. It is especially helpful for pastors, church leaders, and anyone seeking to engage Scripture with greater clarity and intellectual honesty. All are welcome.

Presentation Description

The primary reason homosexuality is debated with such intensity today is the deeply held—and often sincere—belief that the Bible condemns it. While many hold this view with conviction, the question remains: have the relevant biblical texts been read responsibly and in their historical, cultural and textual context?

As Dr. J. Vernon McGee was fond of saying, “A text without a context is a pretext.”

This presentation addresses that question directly. It examines the passages most often cited in this debate by exploring what they meant to those who first heard them in their original context.

Grounded in Scripture and informed by respected scholarship, it moves beyond familiar arguments to reconsider whether commonly held conclusions are warranted.

What You’ll Gain

  • A clearer understanding of the passages most often cited in this debate, and what they addressed in their original context

  • The two clear, objective principles of biblical exegesis by which interpretations of Scripture can be responsibly tested

  • Insight into why the traditional reading does not withstand close scrutiny when these principles are applied

  • An understanding of how later interpretations developed—and how they have been misapplied

  • A clearer sense of how careful, consistent engagement with Scripture can lead to different conclusions

  • Greater confidence to engage this conversation with intellectual integrity, clarity, and pastoral sensitivity.

Why This Matters

  • Many objections to homosexuality and same-sex relationships rest largely on what people assume the Bible teaches.

  • At the same time, many LGBTQ individuals continue to experience marginalization and spiritual harm within faith communities.

  • This issue remains a source of deep internal conflict for many believers—and confusion for others.

  • The broader conversation has often contributed to division, misunderstanding, and, at times, tragic consequences.

  • In today’s cultural and political climate, careful and honest engagement with Scripture is more important than ever.
