Alex Haiken is an independent teacher and presenter whose work focuses on drawing out from the biblical text what it meant to the original author and original intended audience—without reading into it the many contemporary interpretations that may have grown up around it. He completed his seminary studies at Westminster Theological Seminary, and his presentations invite thoughtful, engaging conversation about faith, Scripture, and contemporary questions.
Revisiting the Biblical Debate About Same Sex Relationships:
A Careful Examination of How the Traditional View Fails
Biblical, Academic and Pastoral Scrutiny
—And Why It Matters
by Alex Haiken
Few issues in the church today are as consequential—or as confidently assumed by many to be settled—as this one.
Yet confidence is not the same as careful interpretation.
The real question is not simply what these passages mean today—but what they meant to those who first heard them, in their original context.
This website introduces a presentation designed to take a fresh and careful look at how we read some of the Bible’s most discussed—and often misunderstood—passages.
Grounded in Scripture and informed by respected academic scholarship, this presentation moves beyond recycled debates and politicized rhetoric to focus on careful biblical exegesis. Rather than beginning with what a passage means today, the focus is on what it meant to the original author and original audience—and allowing that meaning to speak for itself.
If we have no idea what the passage meant then—we’re left to merely guess at what it may mean for us now.
The result is a rigorous yet deeply pastoral exploration that equips participants to engage this important conversation with greater clarity, intellectual honesty, and grace.
Even participants firmly committed to the traditional view have often remarked, “You’ve given me a great deal to think about.”
Many who attend come expecting familiar arguments—only to discover the conversation is not quite what they thought.
* As always, the presentation is offered free of charge. I do so because I believe this is important, life-saving work—and that thoughtful, responsible engagement with Scripture matters now more than ever.
